Sponge Density and Thermal Conductivity Relationship

At Elastomer Innovations we specialize in optimizing the properties of silicone sponge and foam for enhanced thermal conductivity. The relationship between sponge/foam density and thermal conductivity is crucial to understand. As density decreases, thermal conductivity decreases as well, while higher density results in increased conductivity. This relationship not only influences thermal performance but also offers cost-saving advantages by reducing material usage and facilitating easier application, particularly when dealing with sheet weight and manual lifting challenges.

Our team of rubber technologists has been at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of rubber compounds to achieve low-density solutions. In light of the pressing concerns surrounding global warming and CO2 emissions reduction, it is imperative to find innovative ways to minimize heat loss through these sponges while maintaining exceptional thermal conductivity.

To effectively influence thermal conductivity, we primarily focus on sponge density and thickness. By minimizing thickness, we can reduce costs. Additionally, reducing cell size within the sponge is a crucial aspect to consider. Substantial evidence suggests that decreasing cell size and increasing the cell count can significantly reduce conductivity. However, achieving this while maintaining the desired low-density characteristics, especially for silicone - our specialty, can be challenging. Nevertheless, we have successfully developed silicone sponges with reduced cell size and excellent thermal conductivity, matching and even surpassing other elastomeric sponges in density and performance.

In our research, we have discovered that a closed cell structure is generally optimal, and we have achieved densities around 100kg/m3 for both thin sheets/profiles and thicker applications. Furthermore, we have found that adjusting the cell size within silicone has a remarkable impact on thermal conductivity. For instance, a 6mm thick silicone sponge with a small cell structure (at 100kg/m3 actual density) exhibits superior thermal conductivity compared to larger cell structures. Our expertise extends beyond silicone, and we are confident in our ability to apply similar principles to other elastomeric foams.

At Elastomer Innovations, we are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of silicone sponge technology, optimizing thermal conductivity, and providing cost-effective solutions for a range of applications. Contact us today to discover how we can assist you in achieving superior thermal performance in your elastomeric foam projects.
